The National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the Cancer Institute/Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (CICAMS) recently signed a statement of intent to share an interest in fostering collaborative biomedical research in oncology and a common goal of educating and training the next generation of cancer research scientists and clinicians. Both parties expressed a desire to enhance the discovery and development of new anti-cancer agents and prevention strategies to enhance the design, implementation, and analysis of cancer treatment and prevention trials, basic science research, and epidemiologic studies.

The signing, by NCI Director Harold E. Varmus, M.D., and Jie He, M.D., President of CICAMS, took place as part of NCI’s meeting on Setting Priorities for Global Cancer Research. NCI-supported researchers and CICAMS researchers have collaborated on scientific projects for more than 30 years. CICAMS was recently designated as China’s National Cancer Center, and will have an expanded role in China’s cancer prevention and control efforts. NCI and the Cancer Institute/Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences intend to cooperate in activities that may include:

  • Collaboration in basic and translational research
  • Collaboration in pre-clinical and clinical trials, and associated translational research
  • Collaboration in cancer prevention and early detection trials and epidemiologic studies
  • Joint meetings, conferences, workshops, and informational exchanges as appropriate.
